Avelar Tummy Tuck

avelar tummy tuck img Avelar Tummy TuckBrazilian surgeon Dr. Juarez M. Avelar, pioneered a new method for abdominoplasty back in the 1990s. This more modern approach requires a smaller incision and allows for a faster healing time than traditional tummy tucks, with the same body-slimming results as a standard abdominoplasty. At his Tampa practice, Dr. Joseph J. Castellano is proud to offer this innovative technique to his patients.

When the Avelar Tummy Tuck is Right

The patients who benefit from an Avelar Tummy Tuck fit the same profile as those who would benefit from a traditional abdominoplasty procedure: women wanting a slimmer figure following pregnancy, men or women who have recently lost a lot of weight and have loose folds of skin and flab as a result, and those who simply can’t tighten and tone their abdomen through diet and exercise alone. Like a traditional abdominoplasty, the Avelar method removes excess skin and fat for a more toned stomach. The real difference lies in the technique itself.

What to Expect

One of the main differences between a traditional tummy tuck and the Avelar method is the inclusion of liposuction. The Avelar method was pioneered in a time when tummy tucks themselves were a fairly new technology. Attempts at performing liposuction at the same time often led to complications and unsatisfactory results. Dr. Avelar discovered that, by avoiding the typical separation of fat and skin from the underlying fascia, blood vessels could remain intact throughout the procedure. When Dr. Castellano performs an Avelar Tummy Tuck, fluid collection is minimized, blood flow to tissue is maintained, and the risk of necrosis (tissue death) is greatly reduced. The likelihood of sensation loss through nerve damage is also lowered by maintaining the integrity of the fascia. With the introduction of an uncompromised blood flow to the area, liposuction is more safely included as part of the tummy tuck procedure.

Avelar Advantages

Dr. Castellano feels there are several unique advantages to an Avelar Tummy Tuck over the traditional method:

  • The surgery may be done as an outpatient procedure because it is less invasive
  • No postoperative surgical drains are needed to reduce the fluid buildup which is common in traditional abdominoplasty
  • More fat is able to be removed via liposuction during the procedure
  • Daily activities and exercise routines can be resumed more quickly, because the Avelar method has a shorter recovery time
  • Overall, there is less physical trauma to the patient during the Avelar Tummy Tuck procedure compared to a traditional abdominoplasty.

Recovery and Results

The results of an Avelar Tummy Tuck are very similar to a traditional tummy tuck from our Tampa clinic: a slimmer and more toned profile without the paunch. Scar placement is also usually quite similar to a standard abdominoplasty, designed to be hidden under everyday clothing. However, the scar is in most cases smaller.

With the improved blood flow to the procedure area, the healing process is often faster and has fewer complications. Although Dr. Castellano does advise that patients may still need help getting around at first, most patients are able to return to their regular active lifestyles more quickly.
