WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SURGERY
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will detail the most important aspects of your recovery process. However, many people often overlook this critical time as they fixate on seeing their final results. It’s important after your surgery to remember that maintaining your body in an optimal state for healing is one of the best ways to see your desired results and recover as quickly as possible.
Immediately after your surgery, you can expect one or more of the following:
-
Soreness
Some amount of physical discomfort is normal after any surgical procedure. Because the Brazilian butt lift is a two-step procedure, you can expect some soreness both in the donor site and surrounding the buttocks.
-
Swelling
Swelling is a natural physical reaction to any sort of trauma, including surgery. The area(s) of your body where fat was harvested will likely be swollen, as will your posterior. Initially, swelling in the buttocks may appear especially prominent because our surgeons account for the fact that not all transferred fat cells with survive, meaning your initial results will make your buttocks appear larger than your final outcome.
-
Bruising
It’s also normal for some bruising to result from a Brazilian butt lift. You may find that the donor site and/or your buttocks are bruised for several days or weeks.
Many men and women who have Brazilian butt lift surgery are able to manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications. However, if needed, your surgeon may prescribe you something stronger. He may also ask you to wear a post-surgical garment, like a compression bandage, or ask you to use ice packs. You will also schedule a follow-up appointment so you can check back in with your surgeon after some time has gone by and make sure your recovery is going well. Your surgeon will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions before you leave your surgical appointment.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING RECOVERY
Your exact recovery experience will vary depending on how your body responds to surgery. In general, the recovery timeline after buttock enhancement is as follows:
-
The first few days
Swelling and discomfort is to be expected during the first days following your procedure. Light activity like walking around the house is encouraged and can help to promote blood circulation for optimal healing. It’s a good idea to prepare ice packs or bags of frozen veggies to help soothe any swelling both around the buttocks and the donor site(s). It’s important during this time to refrain from sitting on your buttocks to maximize the survival rate of the transferred fat cells.
-
The first week
Swelling may persist or even increase during this time and you may notice bruising developing. Discomfort should be decreasing, but it’s normal to still feel soreness. Most people continue to take time away from work during the first week. You should continue to refrain from sitting directly on your buttocks.
-
The first month
Partway through the first month, many people are able to return to work. The average period of time it takes for blood supply to reach the fat graft and incorporate transferred cells into the extracellular matrix is 3 weeks, so it’s important to refrain from sitting on your bottom for at least 3 weeks after surgery. If your job involves more standing than sitting, you may wish to return to work after only 2 weeks. However, if you are required to sit for your job, it’s advised that you take 3 weeks away from work or make any necessary adjustments at your job to allow you to stand or walk rather than sit. Soreness and bruising should gradually dissipate during the first month, though some people wait longer for all swelling to subside.
-
The first few months
Over the first few months, you should notice all swelling dissipate and you should be able to gradually resume your exercise routine and other normal activities. You should be able to sit down without damaging your results and you should notice the size and shape of your buttocks gradually developing into your final outcome. It’s normal to notice your buttocks reduce in size during this time, as an average of 40 percent of the transferred fat cells will not survive the procedure.
-
6 months after surgery
You should have a good idea of what your final Brazilian butt lift results will look like. By 6 months post-op, the donor site(s) should appear back to normal with the exception of some minor slimming of the contours, while your buttocks should have resolved any swelling, bruising or discomfort and taken on a rounder and more projected shape.
-
1 year after surgery
Any scars from the fat harvest and transfer should continue to mature and heal for 1 year or longer after your procedure. By this point, your figure should have developed your final results. If you wish to further fine-tune your posterior or another part of your body, a second appointment may be scheduled.
While a Brazilian butt lift can provide an excellent enhancement for your figure, your body will continue to respond to lifestyle, weight fluctuations, age and other factors. However, the results from buttock enhancement are intended to be long-lasting, allowing you to enjoy a fuller and rounder backside for many years to come. Remember that one of the keys to optimal results is to prepare adequately before your Brazilian butt lift and continue with proper self-care through your recovery process.
