Lip Implant Options
If you’re considering lip implants, you’ll have the chance to make some important decisions about your procedure that can affect your long-term outcome. The primary choices to consider regarding lip augmentation are the size of your lip implant, whether you would like one or both lips enhanced and if you are a better candidate for permanent or temporary lip augmentation.

About the Perma Facial Implant™
Dr. Castellano is an approved provider of the Perma Facial Implant™, a revolutionary silicone implant that is uniquely suited for use in facial tissue, particularly the lips. The Perma Facial Implant™ is available in a wide range of sizes and is designed to be long-lasting, yet easily removable should you decide to return to your pre-operative look. The implant is also designed to be functional, adapting to the movements and shape of the lips without being restrictive.
Selecting the Right Implant
The Perma Facial Implant™ is available in three different lengths and three different diameters.
The available lengths are:
- 55 millimeters
- 60 millimeters
- 65 millimeters
The right length for your lip implant depends upon the distance between your oral commissures, the corners of your mouth. The ideal lip implant length is several millimeters shorter than this distance. The upper lip often benefits from a slightly longer implant than the lower due to its curvature.
The available diameters are:
- 3 millimeters
- 4 millimeters
- 5 millimeters
Choosing the right diameter for your lip implant depends upon your existing lip tissue and your cosmetic goals. Those who desire significantly augmented lips may prefer lip implants with a wider diameter. However, people with very thin lips may not have adequate tissue to house a larger lip implant or any implant at all. For people with very thin lips, nonsurgical lip enhancement may provide a better option.
Choosing One or Both Lips
The most common lip implant procedures augment only the top lip because the top lip is more prone to thinning with age than the bottom lip. However, many people choose to augment both lips in order to maintain balance between the lips. Augmenting only the bottom lip is uncommon, but can be done for those with significantly fuller top lips.
Alternatives to Lip Implants
Lip enhancement can either be permanent or temporary. While permanent lip augmentation using implants can provide beautiful results that don’t need to be touched up, this surgery may not be for everyone. Temporary lip augmentation is a nonsurgical treatment that uses injectable fillers to plump up the lips.
While either option can create beautiful and natural-looking results, many people prefer lip implants as this negates the need for repeat treatments. However, people who are not good candidates for lip implants due to inadequate lip tissue or another reason may be candidates for augmentation using dermal injections. Although injections need to be repeated every few months to maintain results, this option is less invasive and can be an effective alternative to lip implants.
