Rhinoplasty FAQ

If you’ve been considering rhinoplasty, sometimes called a nose job, you probably want to know more about what to expect. Here, Dr. Joseph J. Castellano answers the most commonly asked questions our patients have about nose reshaping surgery. You can also request a consultation with Dr. Castellano, who has helped men and women from Tampa-St. Petersburg to Orlando feel and look their best through a variety of cosmetic procedures.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape, size or profile of the nose. Since the nose is the primary feature of the face, aesthetic rhinoplasty improves facial harmony for a more balanced appearance. Injuries or birth defects can also be corrected during rhinoplasty, or the surgery may be performed for medical reasons, such as to alleviate chronic sinusitis or repair a deviated septum.

Am I a candidate?

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are in good physical and mental health, and want to change the size or shape of their nose. Men and women may also consider rhinoplasty to correct structural nasal issues that interfere with breathing or contribute to other health concerns.

Will insurance pay for my rhinoplasty?

Although eligibility varies from provider to provider, rhinoplasty that’s performed as a medical necessity may be covered under your health insurance plan. Our office is happy to work with you if you wish to submit a claim to your insurance company.

Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

In some cases, rhinoplasty may be combined with other facial enhancements, such as cheek or chin implants, which can help make the nose look less prominent by comparison and allow for a more conservative nose reshaping surgery. Facial liposuction can help to further define the chin and jawline. Sometimes, dermal fillers can also be used to help refine the new shape of your nose.

What should I expect during surgery?

Before your rhinoplasty, Dr. Castellano will discuss your appearance goals so that he has a clear understanding of your hopes following surgery. The procedure itself will vary in technique and time, depending on which approach is used and whether additional procedures are being performed, as well as the level of correction needed. Dr. Castellano will go over your surgery with you in more detail beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

What should I expect during recovery?

After your rhinoplasty, your nose will look swollen at first, and there may be some bruising around the eye area. Keeping the bridge of the nose taped can encourage swelling to dissipate faster, and cold compresses applied to the cheeks may help to minimize bruising. Most Tampa-St. Petersburg men and women are back to their normal daily routines about a week after surgery, but it’s important to check with Dr. Castellano before resuming more active pursuits.

Will I have scars after my rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is often performed with interior incisions only, so scars are rarely visible following surgery. Sometimes, Dr. Castellano may make a very small incision at the base of the nose, right between the nostrils. This is so tiny that it heals up to nearly invisible after surgery. Before your procedure, Dr. Castellano will discuss all the options with you so you feel comfortable about what to expect.

How long until I see results?

Patients typically see an improvement right away following rhinoplasty, as even a very minor shape adjustment can have a positive impact on overall balance among facial features. Your final results and new profile will become more visible as post-operative swelling decreases over time.
