How to Pick the Right Bathing Suit After Breast Augmentation

Updated for 2026

One of the most exciting things after getting a breast augmentation is clothes shopping and finding new outfits that show off your new curves. As summer approaches, finding a new swimsuit is often at the top of the shopping list. While you may be eager to show off your new curves, choosing a swimsuit after breast augmentation is not just about how it looks, but also about providing the extra breast support your new implants need.

When to Buy a Swimsuit?

While you may be eager to hit the stores and find that new bikini that you never would have considered before implants, you may have to wait a little bit longer. If you are in the first few months after your breast augmentation procedure, your breasts are still settling into their ideal position. Rushing out to buy a swimsuit at this stage may result in a poor fit later.

In addition, swimming after breast augmentation isn’t an option until your incisions have completely closed and your surgeon has given the all-clear, so it is often better to wait for at least a month or so after your procedure.

Finding Suits with Support and Coverage

When it’s finally time to hit the stores for a new swimsuit, there are some things to consider. While you may be looking for a swimsuit style that shows off your new curves, you also want to look for certain features that offer your new implants support and coverage. Do you want a tankini or a banded halter? Can you have a swimsuit with an underwire? Will that itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie bikini offer enough support? Let’s look at some top swimsuit styles and how they add up.

Swimsuit Style Pros and Cons

Not every swimsuit is made the same and, while they may look good, not every swimsuit will support and cover your new breasts in the best way. Here we look at some of the top swimsuit options and how they work for those with breast implants.

  • Tankinis – If you are looking for a comfortable swimsuit top that provides optimal support, the tankini may be the best choice. These swimsuits are often designed like a sports bra, providing adequate coverage and support. In addition, straps are often wider, helping to distribute weight evenly and provide additional comfort.
  • Underwire Tops – Underwire swimsuit tops offer quality support for your new breasts, however, these tops should not be chosen until your incisions are completely healed and your surgeon approves the use of underwire. If used too soon during breast augmentation recovery, these can cause pressure on the incision which can increase your risk of scarring.
  • Halter Tops – Halter top swimsuits offer the most support of all bikini tops, especially ones with wider straps that close with a clip instead of tying. This style provides great lift and support to your new implants while also providing comfort and style.
  • Triangle or Spaghetti Tops – While you may find the simple triangle bikini tops with thin spaghetti straps appealing and perfect to show off your new breasts, they do not provide any breast support and are not recommended for anything besides lying poolside and relaxing.
  • Bandeau Tops – Bandeau bikini tops are simple band-like tops that go around the breasts, often with no straps. While these may be okay for smaller breasts, they can often make breasts look droopy or give you a uni-boob appearance while providing little to no support. Oh, and they can lead to embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions.

When a One-Piece Suit Might Make Sense

If you’re still getting used to your new body shape after your breast augmentation, you might consider a one-piece bathing suit, which can be a great low-effort option for the first summer after surgery. Look for options with built-in shelf bras or molded cups, wide adjustable straps and a higher center front that reduces gapping. Styles with a scoop or sweetheart neckline tend to flatter a fuller bustline without adding bulk.

Fabric and Fit Considerations

Beyond the style of the top, consider the fabric of the suit itself. Look for bathing suits with a higher percentage of spandex or elastane blended into the fabric, since these tend to hold their shape and offer more compression and support than a thin, all-nylon suit. Lined cups add another layer of structure and help to prevent show-through, which can be a concern with fuller breasts.

If you are between sizes, size up rather than down. A slightly looser fit is more comfortable on healing tissue than a suit that digs in at the band or straps, and most suits are easier to adjust smaller with removable straps or ties than to stretch larger.

FAQs about Swimming after Surgery

Our cosmetic surgeons get many questions about the ins and outs of swimming after getting breast implants. Here are the answers to a few of the most common questions we get.

  • How soon after surgery can I swim? We generally clear patients for swimming around 4 to 6 after breast augmentation, once incisions are fully closed and healed. However, it can also depend on the type of water you’re swimming in. Pools with properly maintained chlorine levels tend to carry lower infection risk than oceans, lakes or rivers, since natural bodies of water carry more bacteria and are harder to control for cleanliness. If you do swim in open water, you may need to wait a bit longer and be extra diligent about rinsing off and monitoring your incisions afterward.
    • Can I go in a hot tub or jacuzzi after surgery? Hot tubs raise a couple of extra concerns, since the heat can increase swelling and the water is often not as well-regulated for bacteria as a properly chlorinated pool, so we typically ask patients to wait longer before soaking in a hot tub or jacuzzi than with regular swimming.
  • Can I wear an underwire bikini top right after surgery? You will need to wait to wear underwire of any kind until your surgeon confirms your incisions are fully healed, since pressure on the incision line too early can affect scarring.
  • Will my swimsuit size change after augmentation? Often, yes. Cup size and sometimes band size can change after a breast augmentation, so it’s worth waiting until swelling has fully settled before buying a new suit. If possible, try on new suits in-person rather than shopping online to confirm the right fit.
  • Do I need to cover my incisions while swimming? Once your surgeon has cleared you to swim, incisions are typically healed enough that they do not need to be covered. That said, some patients still like to use a waterproof scar bandage for extra peace of mind, especially in open water.
