THE BENEFITS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY FOR MEN
The best candidates for blepharoplasty, or eye surgery, are men who are already in good health and who have realistic expectations about the results of their procedure.
While most men who choose blepharoplasty are in their late 30s or older, those who have drooping or baggy eyelids due to genetics may opt to have the procedure done sooner.
There are also some medical conditions that may cause eyelids to droop enough that vision is partially obscured. For these men, surgery is often recommended to improve overall quality of life.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Eyelid surgery repairs sagging eyelids and can remove bagginess from around the eye as well, although it will not change the structure of the rest of the face. Since the surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, a hospital stay is usually not required.
For upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Castellano places incisions within the natural folds of the lids. For surgery on the lower lid, the incision is made along the lash line or within the smile creases. Through these incisions, Dr. Castellano removes excess fat and skin that may be contributing to the puffy or drooping appearance of your eye.
To minimize the possibility of scarring, very fine sutures are used to close the incisions. The surgery takes one to two hours, depending on whether both upper and lower lids are being operated upon, and whether other procedures are being included.
RECOVERY AND RESULTS
After surgery, you can usually go home the same day to begin your recovery. The incisions will have to be kept clean, and eyelids might feel sore or tight after the anesthesia wears off. Some swelling is common. Dr. Castellano may prescribe eye drops in order to alleviate any possible dryness or irritation within the eye as a result of the surgery.
Some men may find that their vision becomes blurry or unclear for the first few days. Any activity that could raise blood pressure should be avoided for the first few weeks.
Once swelling has faded, the eyelids should be higher and less droopy, giving you a younger and more alert appearance. Bagginess should be reduced, and any incisions should heal to the point of nearly invisible.
WITH OTHER PROCEDURES
An eyelid lift is a procedure often performed with additional facial procedures. Brow lifts are often included to help improve the appearance of the eyes. In order to further reduce signs of aging, a facelift may be necessary in combination with the blepharoplasty. To smooth out the skin around your eye, you may want to consider BOTOX® Cosmetic.
