Breast augmentation is one of the top five cosmetic procedures performed every year. With this steady popularity in breast enhancement, breast implants have evolved over the years, making them safer and longer lasting than their previous counterparts.
While a 10-year lifespan has been the rule of thumb for many years regarding breast implants and replacement, that timeframe is not necessarily the standard anymore. Here we look closely at breast implants, the common causes for replacement, and when you might need to consider implant replacement.
Is There a Specific Recommended Time for Implant Replacement
For many years, patients were advised to be ready for breast implant replacement every 10 years or so. However, that timeframe is not a solid line in the sand. In the United States, there are three main breast implant manufacturers, with implant warranties ranging from 10 to 20 years. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not provide a formal timeline for implant replacement, leaving the decision up to the patient and the surgeon. Implant replacement may be necessary before 10 years or they may remain in good condition for 20 years or more.
Why Do Breast Implants Need Replacement?
As breast implants have evolved, the idea that implant replacement may be necessary every 10 years is a thing of the past. However, there are occasions, both medical and cosmetic, where implant replacement may be necessary and, in some cases, sooner than a 10-year time frame. These concerns can include:
- Capsular Contracture – This is scar tissue that forms around the implant, leading to hardened tissue and a distorted appearance.
- Rupture or Deflation – A rupture or deflation of an implant requires immediate removal and replacement. This can occur from an injury but can also occur due to implant thinning over time.
- Aging and Weight Changes – Natural aging and changes to your weight, whether loss or gain, can affect the appearance of your breasts. Increased sagging or changes to your breast shape can often require implant replacement to achieve your body contouring goals.
- Size or Shape Change – Oftentimes, breast size and shape do not meet your desired results and expectations. Changes to implant size and profile are common reasons for implant replacement.
FDA Breast Implant Care Recommendations
While the life of breast implants has increased, they are still unlikely to last a lifetime. In general, implants are designed to last 10 years, with the risk of rupture or other complications increasing by one to two percent each year. For saline implants, it is recommended to have a checkup at least every few years, though a problem with a saline leak is something that will be immediately noticeable.
For those with saline implants, the FDA recommends an initial MRI or ultrasound five years after implant placement and every two to three years after that to monitor for silent ruptures and leaks.
Understand Your Implants Likely Won’t Last Forever
As we mentioned above, the risk of breast implant rupture, leaking, or additional concerns increases on average by one to two percent each year. While breast implants have a 10-year to lifetime warranty depending on the brand and model, complications can still occur. When deciding to get breast implants, it is important to understand that while they may last for a significant time in your life, replacement at some point is likely, and preparing for that is recommended.
