One of the main differences between traditional abdominoplasty and the Avelar tummy tuck is the inclusion of liposuction. The Avelar method was pioneered in a time when tummy tucks themselves were a fairly new procedure. Attempts at performing liposuction at the same time often led to complications and unsatisfactory results. Dr. Avelar discovered that, by avoiding the typical separation of fat and skin from the underlying fascia, blood vessels could remain intact throughout the procedure.

When our surgeons perform an Avelar tummy tuck, fluid collection is minimized, blood flow to tissue is maintained, and the risk of necrosis (tissue death) is greatly reduced. The likelihood of sensation loss through nerve damage is also lowered by maintaining the integrity of the fascia. With the introduction of an uncompromised blood flow to the area, liposuction is more safely included as part of the tummy tuck procedure.
