Techniques to enhance and improve the definition of the lips may be separated into two categories: temporary and permanent. Temporary techniques use injectable fillers, a process which needs repeating every several months. Permanent techniques use implants. Dr. Joseph J. Castellano is also excited to offer a new technology, the Perma Facial Implant™, which can be used for lip augmentation.

When Lip Implants Are Right
The best candidates for lip implants in Tampa will be those who have realistic expectations about the results, and who are already in good physical health. Lip augmentations cannot be performed on anyone who has active cold sores or scarring on the lips. Some diseases may also preclude the possibility of lip augmentation. Dr. Castellano can assess your candidacy during your consultation.
More about Lip Implants
What to Expect
For those who are still undecided about taking permanent measures to plump up their lips, there are several temporary options available. Several synthetic injectable fillers are available. All of these will last anywhere from several weeks to several months. Injections are performed on an outpatient basis, and most will take just a few moments to perform.
For permanent augmentation, the Perma Facial Implant™ from SurgiSil is a truly breakthrough option. This patented device has been specifically designed in order to provide a permanent solution for facial augmentations. The Perma Facial Implant™ is made from a solid silicone which remains soft and pliable. Implants are made using an injection molding process for total customization. Since the implant is solid, there is no risk of rupture or deflation. It can also be removed at any time. Dr. Castellano is an approved provider of this lip implant technology.
Recovery and Results
Following any lip enhancement procedure, patients may feel mild discomfort and swelling initially. The lips may feel and look too full right away, as some enhancement techniques lose volume so quickly that initial overcompensation is necessary in order to ensure satisfactory results. Usually, normal routines may be resumed within a day.
Patients who choose temporary injectables will need to return for multiple treatments, perhaps once or twice per year, in order to maintain their results. The Perma Facial Implant™ will not need to be refreshed, as the material will not be absorbed into the body and the implant will not dissipate over time like an injection.
With Other Procedures
Lip enhancement techniques may be combined with one or several other surgical or nonsurgical procedures. Some methods of lip enhancement require an additional procedure by their nature. For example, fat transfer will necessitate liposuction in order to harvest the necessary fat cells. The results of any lip implants may also be enhanced through a chemical peel or laser resurfacing, which can reduce fine lines around the lip and mouth area.
