Who’s a good candidate for breast lift?
A breast lift removes and tightens loose skin and surrounding tissue to achieve a firmer and more lifted look and feel. Women whose breasts have a sagging appearance, lack of fullness in the upper breast or have downward-pointing nipples may all be good candidates for this procedure.
Additionally, women considering a breast lift should:
- Have realistic expectations about the benefits and limitations of a breast lift.
- Be at a healthy, stable weight.
- Not smoke, or be willing to stop smoking several weeks before surgery.
Breast Lift with Augmentation
Because a breast lift by itself does not increase your natural breast size, and may in fact slightly decrease total breast volume, some women choose to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation. An augmentation includes the addition of a breast implant to increase breast size, while the lift will ensure that the breasts are high and firm. Combining these procedures often leads to enhanced results, and is easier on the body than undergoing two separate surgeries and recovery periods.
A breast lift with implants could be right for you if:
- You want to restore fullness and improve breast shape after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.
- Your breasts appear deflated or saggy, and you’d like both lift and added volume.
- You want to improve breast symmetry and prefer a larger size.
Breast Lift with Other Procedures
For patients looking to address multiple areas affected by pregnancy, weight changes or aging, a breast lift combined with other body contouring procedures can be an option. Some women choose to combine a breast lift with liposuction and/or a tummy tuck to also address loose or sagging skin in the abdominal area. This combination approach is often referred to as a mommy makeover, which is a customizable set of cosmetic procedures aimed at restoring the figure after pregnancy, weight loss or due to aging.

The Procedure
During breast lift surgery, there are several techniques that may be used, depending on your unique goals and how much correction is needed. Each breast will be lifted and reshaped to create a rounder, more youthful appearance. The nipple will be relocated in a central position on the breast, with your surgeon taking care to minimize the risk of loss of feeling/sensation.
Every effort is made to ensure that the incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible to minimize scarring. In general, incisions span around the areola and down to the breast crease. The incision also may extend within the breast crease. Some scarring on the breast is inevitable in any breast lift procedure, but scars should fade significantly over time.
Most breast lift procedures take between 1 and 3 hours to complete and are performed under general anesthesia. You will need to have someone drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours afterward.
Breast Lift Recovery
Many women report that their breast lift was more comfortable than they expected, although some discomfort and soreness after the surgery is typical. Often, light activities can be resumed within the first week following breast lift surgery. It’s best to wait about two weeks after surgery to begin low-impact exercise, with more vigorous activity to follow after another month. For the first few weeks, a special support bra must be worn 24 hours per day. This will help to reduce swelling and support the breasts, which will facilitate the healing process and ensure correct final breast placement.

Breast Lift Results
You’ll notice an immediate difference in your breast shape and position right after your breast lift, although it’s normal for some swelling and firmness to camouflage results initially. It can take around 6 months for your final outcome to fully develop, so be patient as your body continues to heal and results continue to improve over time.
The scars should fade dramatically over the first year, and often continue fading well into the second year following surgery. Breasts will be both firmer and sit higher on the chest. If nipples previously pointed downward, they will now be placed more centrally.
Although your breasts will still be affected by gravity and aging, a breast lift is a permanent procedure that will help to minimize and slow that process.

Breast Lift FAQs
How much does a breast lift cost in Tampa?
Pricing varies based on your individual goals and treatment plan. For transparency, we list approximate starting prices on our Pricing page. Your exact cost will be confirmed during your consultation and typically includes surgeon, facility, and anesthesia fees (when applicable). Because of this, the best way to get an accurate breast lift cost estimate is to come in for a consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic surgeons. We are also pleased to offer several cosmetic surgery financing options.
Does insurance cover the cost of a breast lift?
Most insurance plans do not cover breast lifts, as they are considered cosmetic procedures. If a breast lift is considered medically necessary, such as severe excess skin that causes rashes or infections, some insurance plans may cover part of the costs of a breast lift. For more information about your specific health coverage, call the number listed on the back of your insurance card.
How painful is a breast lift?
Mild to moderate pain or discomfort can be expected in the first week or so after a breast lift, but this should be easily managed with pain medication and rest. Most people report feeling the most discomfort in the first few days after a breast lift, and many of our patients feel well enough to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.
