Spotting Breast Implants

Many women in the Tampa area are still hesitant about moving forward with breast augmentation out of fear that the results will be too obvious. While this is understandable, let me be the first to assure you that the days of easily spotted cosmetic work are a thing of the past.

Misconceptions

Like many misconceptions, imagining breast augmentation as results that look like “two grapefruit halves” probably has some basis in a very old truth. In the early days of successful implants, the excitement of going bigger was so overwhelming that no one stopped to think about whether or not the results looked natural. Plus, standards for beauty change every couple decades or so, and the dramatic, high profile breast implants are becoming less popular these days as current beauty trends are focusing on a more natural look.

While high profile implants are still available if that’s the look you want, you can also choose implants that have a teardrop shape that’s more like a natural breast. As surgical techniques improve, scars are unobtrusive to the point of invisible. And, as implant designs improve, their feel is closer to natural breast tissue. There are so many options out there designed to grant subtlety to your procedure that it’s nearly impossible to tell if breasts are real or not these days.

Better Results

All of this is not to say that your breast augmentation results from my Tampa practice won’t be noticeable; they absolutely will. You’ll feel sexier, curvier and more self-confident even with very modest implants. The goal of my surgeries is to bring out the best in every woman. And every time, the most flattering changes are those that come from within when you feel great about your appearance.

Laser Hair Removal Before Bikini Season

At my Tampa practice, I hear a lot of misconceptions about cosmetic procedures, and laser hair removal is no exception. Men and women often assume that laser hair removal is a one-shot appointment. In reality, several treatment sessions are needed for best results. My advice to you? If you want to be all set by bikini season, start your spring cleaning in the next few weeks.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

I think the misunderstanding comes down primarily to not knowing how the process of laser hair removal works. When the device is passed over the targeted area, the hair absorbs energy from the laser. This trauma kills the hair, damaging the follicle enough that there is no regrowth. That’s what makes laser hair removal a permanent solution to unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the body.

However, there’s just one catch: lasers can only kill the hair follicle in its growth phase. If the hair isn’t actively growing, then the laser won’t have lasting effects. Since all hairs grow in staggered cycle, this means you’ll have to visit us a few times so we can catch each batch of hair at the right time.

Lasting Effects

Scheduling multiple sessions for laser hair removal is well worth it when you’re looking at the payoff: permanent freedom from unwanted hair. Just know ahead of time that your plan for becoming hair-free will take longer than one quick appointment. With only minimal planning, you can still be trim and tidy well before bikini season hits the Tampa and St. Petersburg area.

Importance of Implant Size

Women from Orlando to St. Petersburg visit my practice specifically for breast augmentation. And nearly all of them tell me the same thing at our initial consultation: their ideal bra size. When I explain that breast implants are measured by volume, not cup size, they’re invariably surprised. That’s exactly why working together closely before the surgery is so important.

Volume vs. Size

Breast augmentation, by definition, means getting larger breasts. These days, though, augmentation isn’t just about going larger. Instead, the focus is on a whole-body aesthetic. The entire industry is changing to reflect this shift. Implants are shaped differently for a more natural slope, implants that feel more like natural breast tissue are gaining preference and women overall are choosing a subtle boost more often than a dramatic new profile.

Whatever your goals are for the surgery, understanding how breast size and shape work with the rest of your body is key to a successful surgery. One size implant may look like a C cup on a small, slender woman, yet only a B cup on a woman with a different build. I work closely with you during your breast augmentation consultation at my Tampa office to make sure I understand your goals completely before proceeding with the surgery.

Another factor to take into consideration is your lifestyle. If you’re an avid runner, for example, larger implants may not be practical or comfortable. Again, these are all things that we’ll discuss at your consultation. In the end, my goal is the same as yours: I want you to feel and look your best. It’s one of the reasons I became a breast augmentation specialist in the first place.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Reduces Sun Damage

The Sun is Your Friend – and Foe

Nothing feels better than the warm sun on your face, and there’s no denying that there’s a healthy glow that goes along with spending a little time in the sun (with proper sunscreen, of course). Yet, the price our skin pays for the damage that results from all those careless times in the sun accumulates over the years, and may cause serious harm. In places where sun-worship is part of the lifestyle, like right here in Tampa, laser skin resurfacing can be used to help remove that damage and reveal a youthful glow.

Friendly Rays?

There are actually many health benefits to the sunlight. In northern climates where there isn’t much sun in the winter, people often suffer from mood disorders like depression. These are often relieved in the warmer months, once the days become longer and people are exposed to more sunlight. Sunlight also affects the body’s production of Vitamin D, an essential part of healthy everyday living.

Yet, sunlight can also damage the skin. The harmful UVA and UVB rays that are found in sunlight can burn and damage the delicate skin cells. Over time, this sun damage causes premature aging, dull, dry skin and discolorations. If the skin cells are damaged enough to mutate, then melanoma (skin cancer) is another possibility.

Luckily, there are some techniques that can reverse skin damage caused by the sun and slow the aging process.

Restoring Healthy Skin

Through the use of special anti-aging skin treatments from our Tampa med spa, you can actually reverse the damage caused by the sun’s rays. You’ll look years younger, and your skin will be healthier. Laser skin resurfacing removes the layer of damaged cells, allowing unblemished skin from beneath to shine through instead. The result takes years off your appearance, and reduces the potential for more serious skin conditions down the road.

Liposuction Is Not for Weight Loss

It’s consistently surprising that so many of our patients believe that significant weight loss can be achieved through liposuction. And not only here in Tampa, where it’s swimsuit season year-round, but people from all over the country also tend to think of liposuction as a weight loss method. While we completely understand the importance of looking amazing on the beach, there is no surgical procedure that works as an alternative to a healthy lifestyle.

When Liposuction Is Best

Liposuction is a procedure that has very little recovery time, with almost immediate results. The procedure itself involves removal of fat cells using a hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted under the skin and used to extract fat cells from the targeted area. The result is a more streamlined appearance.

Liposuction is best when targeted at areas that don’t seem to be affected by either diet or exercise. Common examples include the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, the jowl area, under the chin or along the neck. Of course, liposuction can be performed almost anywhere on the body.

For some of our patients in Tampa, weight loss is a byproduct of liposuction. After all, the removal of fat cells adds up to the equivalent of a few pounds difference. However, the procedure itself really isn’t designed to take off weight; it’s intended to sculpt and shape the body, especially the problem areas that exercise and diet haven’t seemed to help.

Before Your Procedure

We strongly recommend that you reach your weight loss goal prior to undergoing liposuction. Not only will this lead to more realistic expectations about the procedure, but also ensures that you’re healthy and strong before coming in for your appointment.

Top 3 Questions to Ask Your Breast Aug Surgeon

Patients considering breast augmentation in Tampa – St. Petersburg should come in to the consultation armed with lots and lots of questions. It is not only important to know what to expect and what the surgeon thinks would be the best options for you, it is necessary to ask questions in order to gauge your comfort level with the physician. Here are just a few questions you’ll want to ask during your consultation. Make sure the surgeon provides a detailed and personalized response.

How long will my implants last?

While no implant is guaranteed to last a lifetime, they do not have expiration dates, either. Implants do not need to be replaced unless something goes wrong with them. Your doctor will need to explain all of the factors that can lead to rupture or other problems, as well as make lifestyle suggestions that will extend the life of your implants. Many implants last for 10-20 years without any problems.

What type of implant would you suggest?

A good surgeon will have a goal of making the patient’s entire physique look proportioned, attractive and natural. For patients with very little body fat or breast tissue, the surgeon might suggest having silicone implants rather than saline, since the rippling effect of the salt water in saline implants can be visible from certain angles in very thin patients. If saline implants are preferred, the surgeon may recommend placing the implants under the chest muscles rather than over for improved aesthetics.

What results should I reasonably expect?

This question is the acid test of the surgeon’s honesty. Any cosmetic surgeon that promises a perfect result should be looked at with skepticism. The surgeon’s response should be specifically tailored to your particular characteristics, and offer an honest assessment of what might go wrong along with a detailed review of the many benefits breast enlargement can provide.

Why Silicone Implants Are Making a Comeback

In the 1980s and 1990s, silicone implants were regarded as potentially dangerous medical devices. As a result, prior silicone implant designs were voluntarily pulled from the market until comprehensive research could be completed on the risk of silicone gel leakage. That research revealed no link between silicone implants and cancers or neurological disorders, and an updated silicone implant design was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006 after several years of testing and clinical trials.

Today, silicone gel implants are known to be more natural-looking and feeling implants compared to saline implants, and are the most popular choice for breast enlargement at my Tampa practice.

Natural Look and Feel

The silicone gel material used for implants has a feel that closely mimics fat tissue, so the resulting implants look and feel more like naturally occurring breast tissue than saline implants, which are filled with salt water.

Greater Versatility

Patients with very little fat or breast tissue are often advised to have silicone implants because of their smoother look. Saline implants are more likely to have detectable rippling beneath the skin.

Lighter

Silicone is somewhat lighter than saline, and therefore silicone implants are less likely to result in downward displacement or stretching of the skin, which can cause expansion of the implant pocket or sagging breasts.

The vast majority of breast enlargement patients at Castellano Cosmetic Surgery Center in Tampa are very satisfied with their results, whether they chose silicone or saline implants. If you are unsure as to the best material for your overall breast enhancement goals, make sure you engage in a thorough consultation with your physician before you make any decisions.

Do Plastic Surgeons Have Cosmetic Training?

When choosing your practitioner from among the many cosmetic and plastic surgeons in Tampa, it is critical to look for a doctor with advanced cosmetic training. Many patients assume that plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons are the same thing. In reality, each type of doctor has a different focus, and it’s a good idea to know the difference.

What’s the Difference?

Plastic surgery is actually the branch of medicine that focuses on reconstruction for medical, rather than cosmetic, reasons. For example, plastic surgeons may be trained to repair cleft palates, treat severe burns, and correct other physical dysfunctions.

Cosmetic surgeons, on the other hand, may be trained in specific techniques to improve aesthetic outcomes and help patients look better. Some doctors may call themselves cosmetic surgeons but really do not have any advanced training in the field. That’s why it’s important to review the training and experience of any cosmetic surgeon you are considering.

For instance, I completed an elective year of specialized training with the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, which is an additional year-long fellowship focused entirely of cosmetic surgery of the face and body. This is post-doctoral training in cosmetic procedures that even many plastic surgeons have not completed.

Choosing a Practitioner

The bottom line is that before deciding whether a plastic or cosmetic surgeon is right for you, the first place to start is by looking at credentials. Has your chosen surgeon completed any specialized training with a dedicated cosmetic surgery organization? Have they received any awards or been granted any fellowships within the field of cosmetic surgery? Looking at a surgeon’s post-doctoral training and experience will help you assess the surgeon’s abilities.
In the end, the skill level of your surgeon will be the single most important determining factor for the outcome of your surgery, so take the time to find the right fit for your goals.

Do You Need a Facelift, Neck Lift or Both?

For men and women considering a facelift in Tampa, many wonder if they may be a candidate for a neck lift as well. Is it necessary to have completely separate procedure? Or is it easier to combine them and have both procedures completed all at the same time?

Choosing Your Procedure

A facelift from my practice is designed to help you look younger and more refreshed. The idea is not to make you look like you’re 20 again, but instead to diminish deeper wrinkles, create a firmer skin tone, and restore a youthful look to your appearance. A successful facelift doesn’t look like surgery at all; most people will say you look well-rested or that you’re glowing.

A neck lift accomplishes many of the same goals, only the procedure specifically addresses the neck area. If you have sagging jowls, a double chin, or sagging “turkey neck,” then a neck lift can give you slimmer lines and a younger-looking profile.

Complementary Techniques

Many patients can have either a facelift or a neck lift by itself and still look years younger. However, since others find that the signs of aging appear in both areas at about the same time, there’s no reason not to combine procedures for a more total makeover. In some cases, getting a facelift without an accompanying neck lift can make the procedure more noticeable, as the skin on the face will appear smoother and more toned than the adjoining neck and chin.
For optimum impact, it’s often a smart choice to combine both a neck lift and facelift into the same surgical appointment. After all, you deserve to look your best.

Cosmetic Surgery for Male Breasts

Gynecomastia can be a sensitive issue that many Tampa men feel embarrassed to discuss with their doctors. However, male breast reduction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed for men. Enlarged breasts may be caused by many factors, and can be treated surgically through a straightforward procedure designed to remove excess tissue.

Male Breasts?

Although it sounds like a contradiction in terms, men can develop significant breast tissue. In many cases, breast development is caused by weight gain. However, like female breast development, gynecomastia can also be caused by hormonal changes. In the case of male breast growth, these hormonal changes often occur during puberty. There may be other causes for gynecomastia, including genetics, use of prescription or illicit drugs, or lifestyle factors.

Addressing the Problem

Like women, men face a lot of pressure to adopt a certain physical appearance. Men see “built” bodies in men’s magazines, in movies and on billboards. Soft breast tissue is definitely not one of the features advertised as “masculine,” leading many men to seek out surgical options.

If an underlying cause for the breast tissue development can be determined, that must be treated. In some cases, treatment alone will cause the breast tissue to decrease. If male breast reduction surgery is needed, the excess fatty tissue can be removed in order to reveal the more defined pectoral muscles hidden beneath. The result is a more chiseled chest with more defined angles, much closer to the ideal male bodies shown in the media.

If you suffer from gynecomastia, and no amount of dieting or exercise has been able to help, male breast reduction can help you regain your strong and muscular chest.

How Far Would You Drive for Cosmetic Surgery?

The question isn’t how far would you go for the right doctor, but how far would you drive? Many of my patients travel a pretty good distance for their cosmetic surgery, from Orlando, FL all the way here to Tampa.

The Importance of Connection

Does this mean there aren’t any good cosmetic surgeons up in Orlando? Of course not. But it’s not always about your credentials and testimonials. A lot of the time, the cosmetic surgeon you choose is much more than just a physician. We have to be part counselor, part support network, and of course, part doctor.

Deciding to travel here to Tampa for cosmetic surgery means that those patients are making a choice to actively seek out their top choice of practitioner instead of taking the more convenient route and sticking close to home. What they instinctually know is that whichever surgeon they choose is someone they could potentially have a long-term relationship with. And, just like any long-term relationship, distance is no object for the right connection.

Making the Choice

Cosmetic surgery is a major investment, not just financially but mentally and emotionally too. You only have one face and body to live with, and you want to make sure that you’re putting in hands that will appreciate all your unique qualities and bring out the best in you.
When it comes to finding this rare and particular skillset, a little drive doesn’t seem like much of a hassle after all. Take the time to find the best practitioner, the one with the right combination of experience and personal connection, then travel to wherever they are. The right surgeons can be hard to find.

Customization in Cosmetic Surgery

Many of my patients may not realize that at my practice in Tampa, each cosmetic surgery procedure is customized to the individual. This is because everyone’s body is different and is affected by changes differently. Also, each person has different goals for personal appearance. What are some of the factors I take into consideration when making alterations for each patient?

Body Type

It’s important to look at the body as a whole, not just the area needing correction. For example, if considering breast augmentation, a slender woman with a small frame would probably not look right with the same size implants as a taller woman with a larger frame. A large amount of liposuction isn’t required on someone with just a few trouble spots. And rhinoplasty must be tailored to keep the nose in proportion with existing facial features.

Lifestyle

The procedure and technique I use often differ depending on how active a patient’s lifestyle is. To use breast augmentation as an example again, women who jog or practice other regular exercise may benefit from a smaller implant, as this would be more conducive to their current lifestyle. Alternatively, if you’re someone with a high-demand job and can’t afford to miss too much work, a more involved surgery may not be right for you.

Appearance Goals

One person’s tummy tuck is another person’s liposuction. That is to say, depending on how concerned you are about fine-tuning your body, a more subtle procedure can give you just as much satisfaction as a more involved procedure could deliver for a different patient. I take your personal preference and opinions into consideration when deciding on which procedures I think would best help you meet those goals.

The “Total” Body Makeover

There are several advantages to combining procedures when choosing cosmetic surgery in Tampa. However, it’s still important to do your homework first, and make sure you’re prepared mentally and physically for this more intensive process.

Benefits of Combining

If you’re considering a tummy tuck and liposuction and a breast lift, it makes sense to have these procedures performed all at once. After all, you’re already under anesthesia and it makes sense to have just one recovery period.

Although combining procedures can be very beneficial, you should still be cautious that you don’t go overboard. An involved cosmetic surgery procedure will be a lot for your body to handle, and additional procedures just add to the strain. In some cases, the procedures will definitely complement each other, such as in the case of combining liposuction with a tummy tuck. However, if the additional procedures are also very involved, you may be setting yourself up for a longer recovery period.

Extra Commitment

With more extensive procedures, and especially with more than one of them, you’ll need to make an extra commitment to the longer healing process that will be required. With more areas in your body that need healing, your body won’t be able to recover as quickly as it would from a single procedure. Some patients may benefit from giving their body a chance to recover fully before coming back in for a second round. Again, combining procedures isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Just be prepared, and know that convenience on the operating table may mean a greater commitment to recovery later on.

Healthy Recovery from Abdominoplasty

Although it’s a good idea to prepare before your procedure by doing a little homework, you should also prepare ahead of time for your recovery from abdominoplasty. Tampa patients who spend time and energy focusing on the healing process have an easier, healthier recovery.

Taking It Easy

In our society, there’s a lot of pressure to be constantly doing things and being productive. When something comes up, like recovering from an abdominoplasty, most Tampa locals feel like they should be up and about as soon as possible.

The truth is, forcing your body to be active before it’s ready is a really bad idea. Your body needs time to just rest in order to heal properly. Surgery, and especially a fairly involved surgery like a tummy tuck, is a lot for your body to handle. Muscles have been stitched together, skin has been sutured or stapled, and fat has been removed. All of these things take some getting used to, and your body needs time to adapt.

Taking Time

In fact, time is the best healing agent around. Instead of pushing yourself to get better faster, instead try just relaxing and giving your body what it needs: time to rest, time to heal, and a lot of time to catch up on your sleep.

By getting enough down time, your body will recover much more quickly than if you force yourself to get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible. Just remember, your body’s been through a lot with this surgery. Give yourself a break, and just get better.

Liposuction for Heart Health?

Is it possible that liposuction may have greater health benefits than just helping to sculpt your body? Recent studies suggest that when the level of triglycerides in the body is lowered, as happens after liposuction, your body benefits in ways other than simply looking better.

Health Benefits of Lipo

Triglycerides are the fats in blood, and a high level of them indicates an increased risk for heart disease. According to a report presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, triglyceride levels drop an average of 43 percent after liposuction is performed. Even more surprising, 78 percent of the patients who participated in this study were of healthy, average weight, yet still showed the heart benefits of liposuction. The white blood cell count also lowered following the procedure, indicating that fat removal also reduces inflammation, another potential factor in heart disease.

Although we think of liposuction as primarily a cosmetic procedure, it’s good to know that there may be the added benefit of improving our heart health. It’s very common that liposuction from our Tampa clinic, along with other body sculpting procedures, helps to reinforce patients’ healthy habits such as sticking with an exercise program and eating right. Self-esteem often gets a boost following liposuction as well.

The Future of Liposuction

Although more studies need to be done before we have a clear idea of how exactly lipo might benefit complex body processes such as heart health or metabolism, one thing is clear: the impact to our patients is definitely very significant, very personal and goes far beyond basic body measurements.

3 Signs You Could Benefit from a Facelift in Tampa

Of course, we all want to look younger, but when is it time to move on from anti-wrinkle treatments and commit to a facelift? Tampa residents will find there are lots of tried-and-true ways to avoid wrinkles or minimize their appearance. Examples include wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun, using a good moisturizer, eating right, exercising and drinking lots of water.

No matter how hard we try, though, we can’t stop aging completely. Here are some signs to watch for which may mean it’s time to start thinking about a facelift or other facial rejuvenation procedure.

  • Nothing Is Working You’re doing everything right: the sunscreen, the water, the medical-grade wrinkle creams…none of it seems to be working anymore. While prevention is the best cure, there comes a time where you need to move on to actual treatments.
  • You Live at the MedSpa If you’ve discovered the genius of outpatient medspa treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, injectables and chemical peels, you know first-hand how great the results can be. However, they’re not permanent. If you find you’re at the medspa more frequently in an attempt to keep wrinkles at bay and they’re still getting more pronounced, it may be time to invest in a facelift instead.
  • You Think You Look Too Old If you’re discouraged at your appearance every time you look in the mirror, and feel years younger than your reflection would indicate, maybe it’s time for a facelift. Tampa locals especially, with all our southern sun exposure, can see early signs of facial aging like sun damage, age spots, and premature wrinkles. If those fine lines are evolving into deep grooves and you’re not happy about it, come in and see me for a consultation.

How Gummy Bear Breast Implants Got Their Name

Many women seeking breast augmentation in Tampa come to my office asking about “gummy bear implants.” It’s a funny name, but it sure is a catchier term than their official description of “cohesive silicone gel implants.” If you’re interested in getting yourself some gummy bears, you may also be interested in how they got their name.

Gummy Bear Origins

The cohesive gel implants have a natural give, yet are firm enough to hold their shape… just like gummy bear candies. It’s this unique combination of qualities that makes them so popular; these implants feel more like natural breast tissue than their liquid-filled predecessors.

Benefits of the Bears

Cohesive gel implants have a lot of benefits. Traditional implants can collapse or leak over time. They may also become rippled or hard if overfilled. Gummy bear implants, on the other hand, won’t deflate. Even if they lost their containing shell, the material holds together in place. This is a tremendous benefit for women who may still have lingering safety concerns over the use of silicone.

Choosing Your Implant

The majority of breast augmentations in Tampa are performed using silicone gel implants, and the popularity of gummy bear implants continues to increase. If you’re interested in getting your own “pair of bears,” schedule a consultation to see if cohesive silicone gel may be able to give you the results you want.

Why Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Training Matters

Are you feeling unsure where to turn when looking for the right cosmetic surgeon in Tampa? Cosmetic surgery is yet another branch of medicine where the individual surgeon plays a huge role in the overall results. This specialization requires a unique skill set that you shouldn’t assume is common among all medical professionals offering cosmetic procedures.

Defining the Specialty

Unfortunately, aesthetic treatments can be performed by any surgeon or medical doctor, even those who have not had specialized cosmetic surgery training. To the outside observer, it may seem like all those extra certifications aren’t really necessary anyway, especially for a relatively simple procedure. But a lot more goes into a successful cosmetic procedure than you might realize.

Let’s use liposuction as an example. This is not a procedure requiring years of training, and it may seem like any doctor could perform this treatment. From a purely technical standpoint, this may be true. The real difference, though, lies in the most important factor of the procedure: the results.

While most doctors would be able to make an incision, insert the cannula (surgical wand), and remove fat cells, not every doctor is able to grasp exactly how the results will look later on. An experienced cosmetic surgeon who has undergone postdoctoral training in cosmetic surgery procedures understands the way the body will heal, and is able to adjust their technique accordingly. This means accounting for many factors which non-specialized surgeons simply haven’t considered.

Experience and Training

There are plenty of practices in Tampa offering cosmetic surgery, and even more offices which perform cosmetic procedures yet lack the specialized training. Although some common cosmetic treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic can be performed by doctors who are not cosmetic surgeons, are you willing to take that chance with your body and your health? Find a surgeon with both training and skills. The results will be well worth it.

When Ultrasonic Liposuction Can Help

In Tampa, liposuction may be performed through one of several techniques. The question for patients comes in when they’re trying to decide which liposuction method to have. Ultrasonic liposuction is definitely better to use in some specific cases, and understanding its unique benefits can help you make the right decision.

Benefits of Lipo

Any form of liposuction can address problem areas on the body by removing the actual fat cells. In traditional (tumescent) liposuction, this is accomplished by injecting a special solution initially, which swells the fat cells for easier removal and reduces blood loss. Ultrasonic liposuction adds in the use of ultrasound waves to break up the fat cells, making them easier to remove. This form of liposuction can be gentler on the patient, because it is less invasive and doesn’t require the same level of manually breaking up and removing fat as traditional liposuction. Recovery is faster as well, since the surrounding tissues are less traumatized by the procedure.

Specifically for Ultrasonic Lipo

Although ultrasonic lipo can be used anywhere on the body that traditional lipo can be beneficial, there are some areas where ultrasonic is simply better. Since the use of ultrasound waves is more easily targeted, performing liposuction in more fibrous areas (where fat is intermixed with other tissue such as muscle) is much easier than with traditional lipo techniques. Examples include the upper back, lower back and the male chest.

Ultrasonic liposuction may be the solution for your problem areas that haven’t been helped through a combination of diet and exercise. Ultrasound may be particularly beneficial if performed in areas more difficult to treat with traditional methods.

Top Plastic Surgery after Pregnancy: Tummy Tuck

For many women in Tampa, a tummy tuck is one of the most popular procedures requested following pregnancy. While being a new mom is one of life’s greatest joys, there are long-term physical tolls which pregnancy, childbirth and nursing all take on the body. A tummy tuck can resolve one of these issues: your post-pregnancy tummy.

Changes during Pregnancy

During your pregnancy, the uterus expands in order to accommodate your growing baby, and the muscles in the abdomen expand right along with it. Over the muscles, the skin stretches out as well. Some women seem to slim right back to their former silhouette after giving birth. Others battle to achieve flat tummies again.

As we age, our muscles loosen and our skin loses elasticity. This effect is even more prominent in areas of the body which have already undergone drastic muscle and skin stretching, like the abdominal area of a woman who has undergone a pregnancy or several pregnancies. Although many women may think their bodies returned to normal after pregnancy, increasing age may reveal an unflattering look to the stomach as the loose muscles sag further.

How Surgery Helps

At my offices in Tampa, tummy tucks are frequently performed in order to address the post-pregnancy belly, whether soon after pregnancy or many years later. The procedure first tightens the underlying abdominal muscles in order to provide a taut framework upon which the skin will be draped. Excess skin is then cut away, and fat deposits are removed. The result is a firm, flat abdominal profile which may even look better than before you had children and can take years off your appearance.

Prevent Skin Sun Damage

With July already upon us, it’s important to remain vigilant about the sun and how you can minimize your risk of skin damage. Not only is sun damage unsightly, it can also be dangerous to your overall health. With the number of skin cancer cases per year on the rise, here are some tips on how to protect your skin while still having fun outdoors over the remainder of this summer!

  • The sun’s rays are at their strongest between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, meaning you need to be aware when you are spending more than a half an hour outdoors during these hours. Be sure to wear sunscreen with a “sun protection factor” (SPF) of at least 30, and reapply after you go for a swim or get off the ball field. Be especially cautious when you are out on the water, as intensity of the sun increases as it reflects off the water.
  • Wear a hat! A hat can be one of the greatest defenses against sun damage on the face, and they just happen to look good on both men and women (appropriate styles). Take a look at Amazon for some great summer beach styles, or wear your favorite Rays hat even when you’re just hanging around Tampa!
  • Don’t forget to protect your lips! Make sure you are using a SPF protective lip balm in addition to your 30+ SPF (sun protection factor) sunscreen. This will also prevent your lips from drying out and cracking in the blistering July heat!
  • Are you still wanting a little of that “tan” looked? Try some high quality sunless tanner.
  • Choose snacks with antioxidants, like blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in our environment which can help accelerate the aging process. So be sure to pack your beach cooler with lots of these fantastic snacks for your next trip to St. Pete beach. Be sure to put PLENTY of drinking water in that cooler too!
  • And don’t forget to wear your sunglasses. Make sure you choose lenses that have UV protection. It’s even possible to get contacts with UV protection included. With so many fashion options available, protecting your own eyes has NEVER looked so good.

If you have additional questions regarding the protection of your skin during the long days of summer, please feel free to call us at 813-872-6093. Castellano Cosmetic Surgery is here for your Tampa cosmetic surgery questions.

Saline Breast Augmentation Tampa Florida

Today we will be discussing the idea of breast augmentation, specifically the cosmetic procedure involving saline breast implants and some of the common “pros” given by patients choosing saline implants for your Tampa breast augmentation. After you review the information, please feel free to call our office at 813-872-6093. You can also contact us with questions on the Castellano Cosmetic Surgery Facebook page, which is located at https://www.facebook.com/tampacosmetic.

Before diving into the discussion regarding saline breast implants, it is important that we look at a couple of numbers in order to understand the popularity of breast augmentation in Tampa Florida and the rest of the country. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 297,000 women across the entire United States voluntarily underwent breast augmentation in the year 2010. When you pair the total number of procedures in 2010 with the 139 million women over the age of 18 living in the United States, it illustrates that augmentation remains popular.

Time to look at the subject of saline breast implants!

Before the mid 2000’s, saline implants were the most commonly used implant across the United States. With FDA approval of two silicone gel implants in 2006, that popularity has fallen by as much as 20% in practices across both Tampa and the country.

“Popularity,” and news “recognition” factor aside, saline breast implants have many positives that you may not have considered. Take a look at some of the more common reasons our Castellano Cosmetic Surgery patients provide for making saline implants their choice.

  • Cost. Saline implants aren’t as expensive.
  • Adjustability. For women with major breast asymmetry issues, the adjustability of the size of a saline implant at the time of surgery can be helpful to fine-tune the correction of volume differences between the two breasts. With silicone gel implants, the implants are not adjustable, meaning one has to go to the next size implant.
  • No need for follow-up scans. When a saline implant leaks, the saline is simply absorbed by the body. The implant deflates quickly, making the diagnosis of an implant deflation something that is easy and does not require diagnostic tests.
  • Lingering anxiety about silicone gel. Despite the large number of carefully performed scientific studies, which disprove many of the “urban legends” about health issues and silicone, some women just remain more psychologically comfortable with the saline option.
  • Wanting a more “rounded” look. If desired, this can be achieved by the over-inflation of a saline implant. The resulting shape is more spherical in nature, and provides the appearance of an increased upper breast fullness.

Remember to call us at 813-872-6093 to learn more about saline breast implants, as well as other breast augmentation procedures provided by Castellano Cosmetic Surgery. We look forward to speaking with you.

The Basic Facelift Procedure

The Basic Facelift Procedure
Since each face has a unique shape and contour, the surgery will vary from patient to patient. Before the procedure, the doctor will evaluate the patient’s skin consistency and explain the surgery. People who smoke will be asked to stop at least two weeks before the surgery and stay off of cigarettes for a couple of weeks after the surgery, because smoking inhibits blood flow to the skin and can interfere with healing. Patients are also asked to avoid aspirin and other anticoagulants that can increase bleeding.

A facelift can be performed either in a cosmetic surgeon’s office or in a hospital. Most patients are given a local anesthesia combined with a sedative, so that they are awake but unable to feel the procedure. Some doctors may use general anesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep.
During a traditional facelift, the doctor makes an incision that typically begins around the hairline from the temple and curves around the earlobe, ending at the bottom of the hairline. The surgeon may also make a small incision under the chin to specifically tighten the skin of the neck.

The doctor first separates the skin from the fat and muscle underneath. The doctor may make the decision to either use liposuction to remove excess fat, or possible surgical excision to remove excess fat from the underlying tissue. Underneath the skin is a layer of tissue called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). The doctor tightens this layer by folding it, or pulling it back over itself. Tightening the SMAS layer lifts the cheeks, gives the jawline more definition, and firms the neck.

Finally, the doctor pulls the skin back up over the area and removes any excess skin with a knife or laser, similar to the way that you would pull a carpet to tighten it over the floor and trim the excess. The incision is closed with stitches, sutures, or tissue glue. The stitches are usually placed within the hairline so they are hidden by the hair.

The surgery can take between two to four hours, depending on the extent of the tissue and muscle work and the number of procedures being performed.

Other Types of Facelifts
In addition to the traditional facelift, there are a number of other techniques cosmetic surgeons use to give their patients a more youthful appearance.

The mini-lift is term is used to describe less invasive procedures that use a smaller incision and work on a smaller area of the face than a traditional facelift. It is designed to improve the appearance of jowls and loose skin in the neck, but with less dramatic results than a true facelift.

The S-lift works on just the lower third of the face, smoothing out the neck and jowls.
The best candidates for facelifts are people who are experiencing some wrinkling and sagging in the skin of their face and neck, but whose skin still has some elasticity. Facelifts are recommended only for people of normal weight who are in good health. Those with certain conditions, such as blood clotting problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure and the tendency to form large scars should check with their primary care doctor before considering a facelift.

Eyelid Surgery Part 2; Understanding the Surgery

In upper eyelid surgery, the cosmetic surgeon first marks the individual lines and creases of the lids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible along these natural folds. The incision is made and excess fat, muscle, and loose skin are removed. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, thereby minimizing the visibility of any scar.

In lower eyelid surgery, the cosmetic surgeon makes the incision in an inconspicuous site along the eyelash line and smile creases of the lower lid. Excess fat, muscle, and skin are then trimmed away before the incision is closed with sutures.

Eyelid Surgery Part 1

Each year, 100,000 men and women choose a type of eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty to improve the way they look. Blepharoplasty corrects droopy eyelids, which can make you look older and potentially impair vision. The procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Though blepharoplasty is often performed as a single procedure, your surgeon may also recommend a brow lift, facelift, or skin resurfacing to achieve the best results.

Facelift Press Release

In the field of cosmetic surgery, terminology and procedures are often thrown around by the layman with little real understanding of what they mean. Few procedures are as misunderstood as the facelift. For that reason people are often in the dark when it comes to determining whether or not the procedure is appropriate for them, or if they would even be a suitable candidate. Nothing can act as a substitute for speaking with a good cosmetic surgeon, but here are some indications that a facelift might be the procedure you want.

What is Cosmetic Surgery, and is it different from Plastic Surgery?

Cosmetic Surgery is a medical specialty which is dedicated to the enhancement of one’s appearance towards some aesthetic ideal. This can be done through surgical and medical techniques alike. These procedures may enhance the face, neck or body. This specialty is very much multidisciplinary, which means that cosmetic surgery is performed by a wide range Read More

Which Cosmetic Surgery Procedures are on the Rise

Cosmetic procedures were up 5% in 2010. This marked the first increase in years. Interestingly, it’s not just women that have led to this increase. Men have been having more cosmetic procedures as well. Overall, the top cosmetic procedures continue to be Botox, Dysport, and dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Prevelle Silk). These non-surgical procedures were Read More
